This is the question we get asked constantly — and the honest answer is that repair wins more often than most people expect, especially for iPhones and flagship Androids.
If the repair cost is less than 30% of what a comparable replacement device would cost, repair almost always makes financial sense. Example: iPhone 13 screen repair at $149. A replacement iPhone 13 costs ~$500 used or $700 new. $149 / $700 = 21% — clear repair territory. The phone's underlying components (camera, chip, battery if replaced) are just as functional as a new device's.
| Scenario | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| 2–4 year old phone, cracked screen, everything else works | Repair — obvious choice |
| 2–4 year old phone, battery at 65%, slow performance | Battery replacement — $79, buys 2 more years |
| 5+ year old phone, single repair needed, still gets OS updates | Probably repair — check update support first |
| 5+ year old phone, no longer gets security updates | Consider replacing — security risk increases |
| 6+ year old phone, multiple things failing | Replace — multiple repairs approaching device value |
| Any age phone, logic board failure | Replace unless data recovery is the goal |
The practical cutoff is software support, not hardware age. An iPhone 11 (released 2019) still receives iOS 18 security updates as of 2026 — that's a phone worth repairing. An iPhone 7 (released 2016) is no longer supported and hasn't been for years — running unsupported software on any device is a security risk that makes repair a less compelling investment.
Check: Settings → General → Software Update. If your phone is on the current or recent iOS/Android version, it's within support range and worth repairing.
Manufacturing a new smartphone produces approximately 70–80 kg of CO2 equivalent. Repairing an existing phone produces essentially none. Beyond the financial math, there's a real environmental case for repair over replacement — every phone that gets repaired instead of trashed extends the life of materials that took significant resources to produce.
