Quick Phone Fixes You Can Do at Home

June 2026 · 4 min read · By Curbside Phone Tech

Before you book a repair, try these. A surprising number of "my phone is broken" calls come from problems that resolve in 2 minutes with the right approach. We'd rather you try these first.

Screen is frozen / unresponsive
Fix: Force restart. iPhone 8+: press/release Vol Up → press/release Vol Down → hold Side button until Apple logo. Samsung: hold Vol Down + Power 10 seconds. This clears crashed processes instantly.
⏰ 30 seconds
Phone won't charge
Fix: Shine a flashlight into the charging port. If you see grey or brown compacted material, that's lint — gently remove it with a dry wooden toothpick. Lint packing is the #1 cause of charging issues. Also try a different cable.
⏰ 2 minutes
Muffled calls or quiet speaker
Fix: Use a dry soft-bristle toothbrush to clean the earpiece and speaker grille mesh. Lint and earwax block the grille. Brush gently across the mesh to dislodge debris.
⏰ 1 minute
Blurry camera photos
Fix: Clean the lens with a microfiber cloth or soft T-shirt. Fingerprint oil is the most common cause of blurry photos. If macro mode is stuck on, disable it: Camera app → settings.
⏰ 30 seconds
Battery draining in a few hours
Fix: Settings → Battery. Find the app using the most battery — if it's an app running in background, disable background refresh for it. Enable Low Power Mode temporarily. If battery health is below 80%, the fix is a replacement, not settings.
⏰ 3 minutes
WiFi or Bluetooth not working
Fix: Toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off. This resets all radio connections. If WiFi disappeared from Settings entirely (not just connecting — the option is gone), that's a hardware issue requiring repair.
⏰ 1 minute
Phone overheating
Fix: Remove the case, move to a cooler location, and close all background apps. Check Settings → Battery for apps running in background. Don't charge while using processor-heavy apps (games, video recording).
⏰ 5 minutes
Screen looks yellow or dim
Fix: Check Night Shift (Settings → Display & Brightness → Night Shift) and True Tone — both add yellow/warm tint intentionally. If brightness is just low, check Auto-Brightness and screen timeout settings.
