How to Handle a Broken Phone Without Making It Worse
June 2026 · 3 min read · By Curbside Phone Tech
You just dropped your phone. Screen is cracked or the display went dark. What you do in the next 15 minutes matters more than people realize — here's how to keep a bad situation from becoming a worse one.
DO
- Pick it up carefully — don't apply pressure to the cracked glass area
- Check if it still powers on and back up immediately if it does
- Put a strip of clear tape over the crack to prevent glass shards from lifting
- Store it flat in a zip-lock bag if there's any chance of moisture
- Keep it powered on if possible — powering off and on can sometimes trigger LCD bleed to spread faster
DON'T
- Press on the cracked screen — pressure spreads LCD bleed
- Leave it in a hot car (heat worsens LCD and battery damage)
- Keep using it for weeks with bad LCD bleed — it gets worse and repairs get harder
- Try to peel glass fragments off — use tape instead
- Put it in rice if water damage occurred (doesn't work, delays real treatment)
The LCD bleed clock is ticking
If you see dark patches radiating out from a crack — that's LCD bleed. The liquid crystal layer is leaking. This damage spreads under normal use pressure and especially in cold weather (a real concern in Minnetonka and western suburbs of Minneapolis, where winter temperatures cause glass to contract). A screen that's 40% affected now can be 70% affected in 10 days. Book repair sooner rather than later.
With a cracked screen, avoid
- Extreme cold — glass contracts in cold, spreading cracks and worsening LCD damage. Don't leave a cracked phone in a car overnight in winter.
- Pressure in a tight pocket — sitting with a cracked phone in a back pocket is how cracked screens become shattered screens
- Cleaning with liquid — water can seep through the crack into the display assembly
